Mountain Modern Suite Guest book

(PDF version here)

Welcome!

We’re excited to have you stay with us, and we hope you enjoy Bend as much as we do. This book has everything you’ll need for your stay, and some recommendations for getting out and about in Bend. We will give you lots of privacy, but are happy to help if you need anything!

See you around,

Bayen & Emily

(617.429.6888 / 617.990.2440)

P.S. Our friendly dog Sage has access to our fully-fenced property, which is separated from the smaller yard just outside the guest house. She’s great with other dogs and kids (including our little ones). We’re happy to introduce her, but if you’d rather not interact with her feel free to keep the gate between your yard and the rest of the property closed, and please let us know if you have any concerns.
PLEASE TAKE NOTE! There are two security cameras outside so that we can monitor the safety of the guest suite. Your privacy is important to us, so there are NO CAMERAS INSIDE.

Laundry

A washer and dryer are in the laundry closet just off the main living/dining area. We provide a small bottle of detergent – please let us know if it’s empty or running low.

If you use the laundry, please dry the water out of the washing machine door gasket after use, and leave the washing machine door open – it will get moldy/musty if left wet!

Checking in and out

        Check-out time is 11 am

Please wash any dirty dishes, and if you did laundry make sure there’s no water in the washing machine door seal – it will get moldy if left wet.

Don’t worry about stripping the bed or doing laundry, our cleaning service will take care of that.

The door does not automatically lock behind you when you leave. To lock it from the outside, press the “Schlage” button (shown below) and manually throw the deadbolt.

Pets

Please help us stay pet-friendly!

·         Clean up after your pup, there is a scooper and lined pail in the yard.

·         No pets in the shower, this clogs the drain!

·         Cover the couch if your pup is going to hang out there.

·         Please crate your pup if you’re going to leave them here for long periods.

Septic

We are on a septic system, so please only flush toilet paper!

AC/heat

The suite is heated and cooled by a continuously operating heat pump, so it should always be comfortable. Because of the high ceiling, you’ll need to set the temperature a few degrees higher than you want. For example, in the winter, set it to 75°F if you want the temperature to be 72°F.

Please turn OFF if you have the windows open in the summer, to save energy :)

The thermostat is near the main door (black box next to the light switches), to operate it:

Garbage and recycling

Bend separates waste into three streams. There are bins for each in the guest house, and if they fill up before you leave, the main receptacles for these at the top of the driveway, near where you parked.

Garbage – large can at the end of the counter à empty into medium black rolling bin

Co-mingled recycling (NO GLASS) – under the kitchen sink à empty into large blue rolling bin

Glass – under the kitchen sink à empty into smaller blue bin

Take out & delivery

Lots of restaurants in Bend do take-out, some do their own delivery, and most are on either Grubhub or Doordash. There’s also a separate local delivery service for some other restaurants, BendTakeOut (https://www.ordertakeouttoday.com).

Grocery

Our local grocery store is C.E. Lovejoy’s in the Brookswood Meadow Plaza. They’re a great full-service grocery store with beer/wine, growler filling station, and a range of prepared to-go foods.

Other grocery stores in town that we recommend include:

Outdoor activities in Bend

There’s a lot to do here, so this is just a quick summary of our favorites. Please ask if you want to know more!

Neighborhood and local walks

Here’s a list of where we enjoy the outdoors right outside our door. If you’d like more detail on any of these, just drop us a line:

Buck Canyon Rd – great views of the mountains and prime off-leash dog walking, just head out the driveway and turn right.

Sunset Hill – more mountain views, great at sunset, in the River Rim neighborhood just next door. Walk right down Buck Canyon Rd and cut right into River Rim when the trees thin out (½ mile)

Elk Meadow – untouched meadow in the middle of River Rim

Hike or run routes

Running in town is mostly along the Deschutes River along various gravel, dirt, and paved trails. We’re happy to give specific recommendations, or use resources like Bend Trails (https://bendtrails.org/) to find current maps of the local trails and condition reports.

Our favorite spots near/outside of town are:

        Close in

o   Meadow Camp – great picnic spot, and beginning of the southern Deschutes River Trail (DRT) – navigate to “Meadow Camp Day Use Area”

o   Benham Falls – southern end of the DRT, spectacular views of the river – navigate to “Benham Falls East Trailhead”

o   Northern river canyon – dramatic river canyon views along the DRT, park along Archie Briggs Rd where the DRT crosses it and walk North (to the right if you got there by crossing the river) – navigate to 715 Archie Briggs Rd.

o   Riley Ranch Nature Reserve (no pets allowed) – beautiful open space and well-maintained path along the river in a steep canyon, navigate to “Riley Ranch Nature Reserve”

Heading East – totally different landscape than the mountains, and generally dry if it’s wet to the West:

o   Bessy Butte – short moderately steep hike to the top of a mostly bald butte, navigate to “Bessy Butte Trailhead”

o   Horse Butte/Swamp Wells trails – network of great single-track near Bessy Butte

o   Badlands – network of trails on 30,000 acres of pristine high desert 30 minutes east of Bend, directions and maps here: https://www.blm.gov/programs/national-conservation-lands/oregon-washington/oregon-badlands

Cascades (West) - there are far too many options to put here! Check out sites like The Outdoor Project (https://www.outdoorproject.com/blog-news/oregons-75-best-day-hikes) for info. Our top favorites are below, but please note that the US Forest Service recently began requiring permits for many of these destinations, more information is here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/willamette/passes-permits/recreation/?cid=fseprd688355

o   Broken Top Little Crater (“No Name”) Lake, navigate to the Crater Ditch or Broken Top Trail trailheads

o   Tam MacArthur Rim, navigate to Tam McArthur Rim Trailhead near Three Creek Lake

o   Camp Lake, navigate to Pole Creek Trailhead

o   Green Lakes and Soda Creek, navigate to Green Lakes Trailhead (very busy in the peak of the summer)

o   South Sister, navigate to Devil’s Lake trailhead (very busy on weekend days)

Biking

Most resources for biking around Bend are focused on off-road trails. Sites like Bend Trails (https://bendtrails.org/) will be the best places to get current into. The best-known trails are part of the Phil’s Trails network West of Bend, and are best accessed from the parking lots at either “Phil’s Trailhead” or “Cascade Lakes Welcome Station.” Some less busy trails/networks include:

Maston, just North of Bend – navigate to Maston Trailhead

Swamp Wells, just East of Bend – navigate to Horse Butte or Swamp Wells Trailheads

If you’re interested in road cycling, please ask for recommendations! We get out on our bikes a lot and can steer you in the right direction.

If you’re mostly interested in speed and air:

Mount Bachelor also runs a downhill park in the summer, worth checking out if you love speed.

Several outfitters run shuttles that let you bomb without climbing, e.g. Cog Wild (https://www.cogwild.com/)

Skiing

Mount Bachelor is the main Alpine action in town, and they have a great Nordic center, too.

There’s an excellent network of groomed Nordic trails (skate and classic) accessible from the Virginia Meissner and Swampy Lakes Sno-Parks. Check out http://meissnernordic.org/ for trail info and conditions.

o   You need a Sno-Park pass displayed on your dashboard to use these parking lots in the winter, so grab a day pass before heading up to avoid a ticket – these are sold in lots of local stores, but the most convenient are Pine Mountain Sports and Powder House.

Water

Float the river through town, starting from River Bend Park to Drake Park. Floats are available for rent at River Bend. There’s a shuttle back from Drake Park for a small fee, but it’s crowded and we usually set up our own shuttle (bring a bike, drop off gear at River Bend, park at Drake, and ride back to River Bend to start).

Paddle from River Bend Park (see the Old Mill) or Drake Park (Downtown) – rentals are available at Tumalo Creek Kayak and Canoe (Old Mill)

Elk Lake Resort – bring your own boat or rent a variety of motorized or self-propelled toys

Sparks Lake – no resort or rentals, but beautiful and peaceful paddling

Raft the Deschutes – several outfitters run various length day trips, we have used Sun Country (https://suncountrytours.com/) but there are many others

Gear rental/service

        Pine Mountain Sports (bike, ski)

        Sunnyside Sports (bike, ski)

        Lone Crow (bike)

        Powder House (ski)

Tumalo Creek Kayak and Canoe (water)

Dog-friendly activities we love

Bend has lots for your dog to do!

Most trails in / close to town require a leash between May and September, but further out you are generally free to go off-leash.

Official dog parks are listed here (mix of fenced areas and open spaces): https://www.bendparksandrec.org/parks-trails/dogs-in-parks/

o   By far our favorite is Pine Nursery – it’s larger and almost always has lots going on

The “Good Dog” off-leash area is a huge natural area where your pup can roam free and swim in the Deschutes (not fenced in) – navigate to “GoodDog!” or the Rim Rock Trailhead

While not an official off-leash area, the private owner of the “Old Back Nine” allows folks to walk their dogs on >100 acres very nearby (not fenced). We suggest parking at the corner of Parrel and China Hat Roads, and walking SE.

If your dog loves to swim:

Within walking distance is the tiny and seldom used River Rim Park, which has river access. While not officially a dog park, it’s a local secret for letting your dog get some swim time.

The Old Mill dog park has a small partially fenced river-front section (usually pretty busy in the summer)

A cool canal runs through the Back Nine

“Good Dog” also has river access, and usually lots of pups playing in the water on hot summer days
